Blue Ridge Community College is the only college FAA-approved to offer the following courses in the Aviation Maintenance Technology Program online.
Distance AMT classes are anticipated to start every two years and take place online, with the exception of summer laboratory classes held at the BRCC Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport facility.
Requirements for Applicants:
- Be a high school graduate or equivalent. High school students may be eligible on a space available basis only.
- Consider taking the free Dantes Distance Learning Readiness Self-Assessment Online Assessment to see if you a good candidate for online instruction.
- Take the SmarterMeasures Online Student Readiness Assessment ($24.95) and score at the 25 percentile or higher and send test results to the AMT Coordinator.
- Provide a description of your learning environment (designated space, adequate Internet access, lack of disruptions, and adequate organized area) to the AMT Coordinator.
- Complete the BRCC application for admission.
- Complete an interview (face-to-face, Skype, or phone) with a member of the Aviation Maintenance Technology Staff.
Optional: Submit a letter of recommendation from a licensed Aviation Maintenance technician.

Certificate Exams
Graduates of the Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program are eligible to take the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Written, Oral, and Practical exams for a Mechanic’s Certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings. BRCC AMT graduates have a 100% pass rate on the certification exams.
Approval
BRCC’s Aviation Maintenance Technology Distance Education program is fully approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Residence in Service Region
Space in the AMT Distance Learning Program is limited to 25 students, therefore some applicants may not be accepted even if the minimum requirements for admission are met. Priority shall be given to qualified applicants who are residents of the BRCC service area which includes: Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County, Rockingham County, and Highland County and then to Virginia residents not having access to AMTprogram at their local Virginia community college.
In order to be considered a resident of the BRCC service region, applicants must have been domiciled continuously in the service region for the 12 months prior to the application deadline and must not be residents of the service region for the primary purpose of education.
