Qualifications

Since BRCC has a very diverse student body, we have divided the qualification ranges into several distinct categories. Not all students fit neatly into one of these areas, but you should get a good idea of what qualifications are necessary for the program.

I. Qualifications for students entering BRCC directly from High School:

  • Completion of at least one year of a PreCalculus course, including Trigonometry, and two years of lab science courses.

and

  • Earned scores on the BRCC math placement exam that corresponds to a mathematics skill at the level of MTH 163, MTH 164, MTH 166 or MTH 173.

or

  • If you are currently enrolled in a PreCalculus Mathematics or Science dual-enrollment course offered by BRCC or other Virginia Community College, recommendation to the program by your dual enrollment instructor.

II. Qualifications for students entering BRCC that are not coming directly from High School:

  • Completion of at least one year of a PreCalculus course, including Trigonometry, and two years of lab science courses in high school or a minimum of 2 years of work experience in a position requiring comparable mathematical, scientific or technical skills.

and

  • Earned scores on the BRCC math placement exam that corresponds to a mathematics skill at the level of MTH 163, MTH 164, MTH 166 or MTH 173.

III. Qualifications for current BRCC students or students transferring from another Virginia Community College:

  • Completion of at least 5 semester hours of PreCalculus mathematics and 4 semester hours of lab sciences or technology courses at a VCCS College with a grade point average between 2.0 – 3.0 in these courses.

or

  • Earned scores on the BRCC math placement exam that corresponds to a mathematics skill at the level of MTH 163, MTH 164, MTH 166 or MTH 173.

or

  • Recommendation to the program by one of your current BRCC Mathematics or Science instructor.

BRCC reserves the right to make minor exceptions to those qualifications specified above based on individual circumstances.
