A licensed veterinary technician (LVT) is a trained, credentialed professional who is an integral member of the veterinary health care team. In Virginia, licensed veterinary technicians working under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian may perform those tasks related to animal health except the diagnosis of disease, prescribing drugs, or performing surgery. Those tasks include complete dental prophys, dental extractions of single rooted teeth, routine skin closures, diagnostic microscopy, and placing intravenous catheters among many others. All work performed by the LVT is done under the direct supervision of licensed veterinarians and is carried out in compliance with state law. As the field of veterinary medicine becomes more sophisticated and complex, veterinarians utilize the skills of licensed veterinary technicians to help them provide the highest quality of care possible to their patients. If you have a strong compassion for animals, have an aptitude for science and math and are dedicated and hard working then veterinary technology may be a rewarding career for you.
