Pat continually gave back to her profession, serving the Virginia Association of Licensed Veterinary Technicians for most of her career. She served as treasurer and President of the Association in the 1980’s and was recognized as the VALVT Technician of the Year in 1989. She continued her service to the profession and the association as the regional director of the Tidewater association and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

To honor the legacy of professionalism, education and mentorship that Pat held so dear throughout her career, a scholarship has been established in her memory at Blue Ridge Community College.

Contributions may be made to the Patricia MacKenzie Memorial Scholarship in Veterinary Technology by check, payable to BRCC Educational Foundation, Post Office Box 80, Weyers Cave, VA 24486. Please make a note that the donation is for the Pat Mackenzie Scholarship in the memo line or in an attached note. Contributions may be made by credit card by calling Tami King at the BRCC Educational Foundation. Tami can be reached at 540-453-2389.

A licensed veterinary technician (LVT) is a trained, credentialed professional who is an integral member of the veterinary health care team. In Virginia, licensed veterinary technicians working under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian may perform those tasks related to animal health except the diagnosis of disease, prescribing drugs, or performing surgery. Those tasks include complete dental prophys, dental extractions of single rooted teeth, routine skin closures, diagnostic microscopy, and placing intravenous catheters among many others. All work performed by the LVT is done under the direct supervision of licensed veterinarians and is carried out in compliance with state law. As the field of veterinary medicine becomes more sophisticated and complex, veterinarians utilize the skills of licensed veterinary technicians to help them provide the highest quality of care possible to their patients. If you have a strong compassion for animals, have an aptitude for science and math and are dedicated and hard working then veterinary technology may be a rewarding career for you.
