Necropsy Technician #00507-Harrisonburg
(Lab and Research Technician, Pay Band 2)
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking a Necropsy (Autopsy) Technician for the Harrisonburg Regional Animal Health Laboratory to assist the veterinary pathologist in receiving and preparing animal carcasses for diagnostic examination. Duties include assisting with euthanasia; cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining the necropsy room and equipment; incineration of carcasses; collecting and preparing specimens for laboratory testing and shipment; sterilization of glassware; preparation of media; and assisting with other laboratory functions as needed. Position requires occasional work after normal work hours and/or weekends.
Qualifications: Some knowledge of the normal anatomy of a variety of animal species as well as demonstrated knowledge of animal health, anatomy and disease control. Awareness of the general principles of sanitation and disease control. Familiarity with the care and maintenance of instruments and tools. Effective recordkeeping, organizational, customer service and computer skills. Verifiable ability to interpret and follow instructions and work harmoniously with others. Ability to distinguish colors; push, pull and lift large animals (including adult cattle and horses) using mechanical assistance; work with unpleasant odors and animal carcasses; be exposed to animal feathers, dander and hair and other chemical substances; stand for long periods of time; and experience with laboratory processes to include sanitation, bio-security, and quality assurance procedures. Prefer: Graduation from high school or equivalent and additional training in general biology, anatomy or necropsy procedures; experience applying sterilization procedures in a biohazardous environment or any other related experience in a laboratory or autopsy room. Occasional after hours or weekend work required. Hiring Salary: $20,082 – $25,000 annually.
